Health Services Research (HSR) is a multidisciplinary field of research that examines how people get access to health care, how much care costs, and what happens to people as a result of this care. Yet much of the data and research necessary to fashion good health policy is either inadequate or missing altogether. Governance is concerned with the authority chains and the allocation of responsibility for actions that take place within the systems and structures of health services. The case study approach allows in-depth, multi-faceted explorations of complex issues in their real-life settings. A survey of mental health research priorities in low- and middle-income countries in 2009 found that stakeholders and researchers ranked three types of research as most important: epidemiological studies of burden and risk factors, health systems research, and social sciences research. The value of the case study approach is well recognised in the fields of business, law and policy, but somewhat less so in health services research. This special edition of Health Services Research testifies to the emerging recognition of the importance of global health services research and constitutes a timely addition to the body of research needed to help guide good policy. Governance of health services is an important area of research, as it defines the framework in which services are delivered, affecting access to them, their efficiency and the quality of care. 2019 Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics): 43/102 (Health Care Sciences & Services) 27/87 (Health Policy & Services) Studies focused on implementing research findings into practice The Importance of Global Health Research: Closing The 10/90 Gap “Pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis and malaria, when combined, have been estimated to account for more than 20% of the disease burden in the world (mostly in developing countries), yet they receive less than 1% of the total public and private funds which are devoted to health research.” A clarification of our policy on Support for Scientific Research and Development Projects (1204.1) is available here. It is a relatively young discipline that brings together a number of different social science perspectives with the contributions of individuals and institutions engaged in delivering health services. A poll carried out by the National Institute of Health Research in 2012 showed that 82% of the public think that it is important for the National Health Service to offer opportunities to take part in healthcare research - only 7% said they would never take part in a clinical research.
